Balboa Park, a historic urban cultural park covering 1,200 acres in San Diego, California, USA, is located. It includes open spaces, natural vegetation zones and green belts as well as walking paths and gardens. There are also museums and theaters and the famous San Diego Zoo. The park's boundaries also include many recreational facilities, gift shops, and restaurants. The park was established in 1835 and is the oldest site in America that has been designated for public recreational use. The Parks and Recreation Department of San Diego manages Balboa Park. Balboa Park was home to the 1915-16 Panama-California Exposition as well as the 1935-36 California Pacific International Exposition. Both of these events left architectural landmarks. In 1977, the park and its historic Exposition buildings were designated a National Historic Landmark (and National Historic Landmark District) and placed on to the National Register of Historic Places.
